  • View of Maysville from Aberdeen – Plein air 27 April 2021

I have been painting with an artist friend who is visiting Maysville and just getting started plein air painting.

Today, we picked the view of Maysville from Aberdeen. My ‘demo’ painting is on the easel. This was painted with the same limited palette as last time: burnt sienna, yellow ochre and ultramarine blue.

Here’s a close up of the ‘demo’ painting.

  • work in progress-peace in progress

If you watch much news, the beginning January has been a high anxiety month. I’ve always been a little bit hippy dippy at heart, and pottery for peace has been my theme for my latest batch of pots. They still need to be fired, but you can get an idea of the surface design from this photo.

stay tuned to see how they turn out–and be nice to each other!

  • kiln firing 22 January 2021

I just opened the kiln, and have some new porcelain pots. Most exciting to me are the new plates. These little rectangle plates are about 8″x6″ a perfect size for a sandwich and some chips, or three tacos.
I don’t sell pots online. I try to take the best photos I can, but a pot needs to be picked up and held to really ‘know’ if it’s the right one for you. You can see them on my front porch in Old Washington. Cups, rectangle plates and bowls with carving on the outside are $40 Bowls with carving inside and out are $80. First come, first served.

  • Happy New Year 2021

Happy New Year! When I work in clay, i sign the bottom of each pot with my name, location and year created. For my FINAL pot of 2020, I made a plate to celebrate the little village where i live, OLD WASHINGTON. If I HAD to be stuck in one place for the year 2020, I’m grateful it was here!

porcelain plate with sgraffito design of Old Washington, Kentucky. Log Cabin, Federal Brick buildind and white church house.

When I was young, i was led to believe that an artist has to live in a big metro area to ‘make it’.

Now that i’m older and have more experience in the world, I know that a small town is a great place to an artist! I’m so grateful to have been welcomed and a part of this small rural town.

This pot is a work in progress. It still needs to go through the kiln.

    Happy New Year!

I thought this ancient Persian saying was a good thought to wrap up the year 2020. Let’s hope 2021 is easier on us.
Work in progress: unfired porcelain. Blue will be darker and clay much whiter (and translucent) after firing (if it doesn’t crumble into rubble in the kiln–which can happen with clay art…especially porcelain)
    Happy new year everyone!!!
I probably shouldn’t share work in progress photos for porcelain work, because there’s a chance they won’t make it through the kiln firing…but I’m so excited about this pair of dove plates…I can’t resist showing them off!
Last night, I shared the work in progress for a porcelain plate/tray in my “stories”. I didn’t have enough time to finish the carving until today. It still needs to dry and go through the kiln twice, but the creative work is all done.
  • Carving A Porcelain Plate – This Too Shall Pass

Yesterday, I carved a design on a plate. Im still learning to make plates in porcelain. For some reason this beautiful and fussy diva of a clay likes to crack and warp on me when it’s in a wide, flat piece. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that it will make it through the kiln

  • a special painting commission – downtown Maysville

I usually say no to commission work, but every now and then the stars line up, and I agree to do one. This impressionist style oil painting was a gift from friends to a friend. A portrait of her house, to celebrate a milestone birthday. Im thrilled with how it turned out! And now that she received it, I can show it off to you all!
