Yesterday, I went down to the river to do some sketching. Maysville is charming little river town. One of it’s distinguishing features is a suspension bridge that connects Kentucky and Ohio.
My first sketch was the view from bank and 6th street. It’s a great view of the town. I decided to do a panoramic drawing, to give a wider view of the place.
My second sketch was the corner by the Rotory Club Park…where the road goes under the train tracks.
I think the theme for today is ‘bridges’
For my final sketch, I crossed the river, and sketched the town from the river park in Aberdeen, Ohio.
You can probably tell that the sun was going down at this point, so I didn’t get to put all the details into this sketch, but the composition is all worked out.
What a great day of sketching! Of course, Maysville is such a pretty town, it’s not possible to get a bad drawing.
I’m going to make a woodcut of at least one of these sketches. Help me decide, and let me know which sketch is your favorite.
I make my frames from scratch, and it takes many days from start to finish. All the hard work is worth it, look how good my block prints look in my hand made frames. I’m so proud of them, I put. my signature on the frame.
I have been experimenting with a technique, where I paint watercolors over a linocut.
It’s a kind of hybrid work of art. It’s part an original painting, and part printmaking. After some research, i decided to limit the times I paint this particular print to 5. The ev after the number means the edition is variable. Even though the design comes from the same block, the colors are different each time.

The theme for May’s ArtZINE is: NEVER AGAIN
The idea for the ArtZine project is for artists (particularly those who live in small towns) to get to know each other by visiting each other’s communities, and making a self published magazine together. We are particularly excited to have the chance to visit Mt. Sterling, because it is a small town with an already thriving art and zine culture. The Gateway Regional Arts Center, located in Mt. Sterling, publishes the art/literary zine: uncommon Grackle.
To participate in ArtZINE, create your entry to the ‘zine before the meet up: Take a sheet of letter sized paper, and fold it in half. That is the size of our zine. You can put whatever you want inside. it can be a drawing, poem, short story, photograph, collage, crossword puzzle, anything– We’ll have computers and a scanner available to put it in the layout.

On the day of the event, we will meet each other in person at the library, and work together to create the ‘zine covers, print and assemble the ‘zine.
The activity is free and open to the public, all skill levels and types of art are welcome to join us. all participants get their own copy. Bring a lunch

Tonight is Final Friday at the Pendleton Art Center. If you live near downtown Cincinnati, we will be open from 6-10pm. there are 3 buildings (including an 8 story warehouse) filled with art studios for you to explore and enjoy!

We just completed our 8th ArtZine. Since September, we have visited a different small town to make a magazine about a different theme. Monday, April 23rd, we met in the Rabbit Hash Historical District to create work around the theme: I remember when…
There was an overwhelming turnout (over 26 participants!) From different parts of Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana. It’ll take a few days until we publish the online edition, but here is a short (less than 2 minute) video preview. It features some of the different hand painted covers, as well as this month’s entries.
